Starcraft 2 Cute Defense

I have been finding myself playing this little gamemode quite a bit lately. If you know anything about Starcraft and Starcraft 2 - people loved making their own custom game modes and mods for it. This is one of those!

The concept is actually quite simple and I am sure there have been other games out there who have tried to do something similar. However, I think this is one of those fun things that has found its place within another game. Similar to how Garry’s Mod has a ton of different game modes that have done great within its eco system but when they split off they don’t do as good.

For the sake of brevity I will be focusing on the core modes I play, versus, and PvE.

Random Options

Now to make a base not too difficult. However, there is randomness in it where your builder has three abilities that never stay the same (bottom right in picture). These three abilities change every time you build one of the three options or press the hotkey G which refreshes the three options.

When you manually refresh the options the cost to refresh goes up. This means you can’t keep refreshing them to get what you want. If you do it too fast you can quickly end up paying 150 gold per refresh which can quickly drain your bank! So you must be strategic and balance what you build vs refresh.

The Rules

The map is split into two sides within each side there are bases drawn out with hedges. These two sides are exactly the same except mirrored. These “rooms” that are made have a single spaced entry, some two separate entries, some single but double spaced. Long story short you have gaps and they must be filled! These two sides house the two different teams of four, each person is a small peon which is known as your builder.

Using your peon you must build your base and its defenses using towers, heroes, and units. To build said town you need to collect gold and there are a few ways to go about doing that. The first is to build mines around your town center, you get one miner from the town center with a time limit and every time it spawns costs you 25 gold. The second is your “base income” which you get every 10 seconds. To increase this base income you send units otherwise known as cutelings to the enemy team.

Gameplay

Now on top of sending units and bosses you can upgrade the walls, towers, and cutelings. But this all costs gold and it gradually goes up the more you upgrade. So you are constantly fighting off your enemies cutelings as well as ensuring you are increasing your income enough to keep up with upgrades.

If your enemies decide to upgrade the cutelings on your side while you’re trying to go for a better economy, you may not be able to stay alive long enough to benefit from it.

To read more about the game itself you can view it here!

Why are you writing about it?

Because its a fun game and if you have Starcraft 2 I would recommend you spin it up and give it a try! Although most people play the PVP modes there are a ton of modes that you can usually get a full lobby for!
